UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Freshman Mia Castagnero and sophomore Kim Egizi both tallied six points each to lead a dominating effort by the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team in the season opener, winning 16-2 over Mercer on Saturday afternoon.
Castagnero's five goals are the most by a freshman in a single game in program history and sixth-most ever by a Spider. Egizi followed up her All-Rookie campaign with a six-point opener coming from three goals and a game-high three assists.
Seniors Brooke Wilson and Charlett Stevenson, along with junior Natalia Chaney also had multi-goal performances with two a piece for the Spiders.
The 14-goal margin of victory is the largest for Richmond since April 14, 2013 in a 22-8 home victory over St. Bonaventure. The two goals allowed is the fewest by the Spiders since April 28, 2006 in a 20-2 home win over Saint Joseph's.
Richmond dominated from the start with Castagnero scoring just over a minute into the contest. After Mercer responded with a goal of their own, the Spiders ripped off four straight, starting with a goal from Marissa Brown in the seventh minute.
Mercer cut the lead to 5-2 in the 16th minute, but Richmond closed the half with four straight goals, the final two coming from Stevenson.
Egizi and Castagnero both scored in the first five minutes of the second half to ignite a seven-goal onslaught in the half that secured the 16-2 win for the Spiders.
For the game, Richmond outshot the Bears, 55-6. Eight different Spiders tallied a point in the win.
The Spiders return home next Saturday when they host in-state rival Liberty. Game time at Liberty is set for 1 p.m.
