Scouting Davidson
Davidson has struggled one year after winning the A-10 regular season title. The Wildcats have dealt with injury issues all season, and have struggled defensively, ranking last in the conference in scoring defense and rebounding defense. However, the team's offense remains potent (78.6 ppg), ranking second in the conference.
Atlantic 10 scoring leader Jack Gibbs averages 24.9 points per game.
Series vs. Davidson
Davidson leads the all-time series with Richmond, 32-13, with many games coming as the teams were old rivals in the Southern Conference. The Wildcats have won both games against UR in Belk Arena and are 16-2 against Richmond all-time at home, including an 81-67 win last season. The Wildcats won a 78-70 decision at Richmond last month with Peyton Aldridge scoring a game-high 34 points.
Player of the Year Candidate
Terry Allen has received praise from the national basketball media with writeups from ESPN, CBS, American Sports Network, Cox Sports and others on his stellar play to start the season.
Allen ranks fifth in the conference with 18.5 points per game and is sixth in the conference with 8.2 rebounds per game. Allen also ranks eighth in the conference in steals per game with 1.6. He is the only A-10 player to rank in the top 10 in all three categories.
He has tallied nine 20-point games and five double-doubles this season.
Terry Allen's 31-game double-digit scoring streak came to an end against UMass where he recorded only nine points. Allen's streak was the fourth longest active streak in the nation. That 31-game streak was the second longest under head coach Chris Mooney, with Kevin Anderson's 36-game streak still intact.
Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
Richmond has averaged 78.0 points per game this season, ranking third in the A-10 and 69th in the country in scoring offense.
UR has been incredibly efficient in its scoring, leading the Atlantic 10 and ranking 14th in the country with a field goal percentage of 48.8.
The most points scored in one season under Coach Mooney was 70.0 in 2012-13. Richmond's scoring record for one season is 84.8 points back in 1965-66.
Pretty Good Ratio
Richmond committed just 34 turnovers in the last three games while dishing 69 assists. The Spiders now rank fifth in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio. Richmond boasts eight games in which the number of assists were double the amount of turnovers.
The Spiders also lead the league and rank 17th in the country with 17.0 assists per game. Richmond made 29 assists against Stetson, just two away from the school record. UR has had eight games with 20 or more assists, and the Spiders are 13-3 when winning the assist battle.
Covered, Smothered and Diced
Over the last three games, Richmond's defense has been much improved, holding UMass, Saint Louis and Fordham to 33.3 percent from the field.
Against UMass, Richmond posted its best defensive effort of the year. The Spiders held the Minutemen to a season-best 30.4 percent from the field and limited them to 53 points. Richmond tied its conference high with five blocks, while limiting UMass' leading scorer Trey Davis (18.9 ppg) to 0-of-11 shooting. UR then held SLU to just one field goal over the first nine minutes of the second half.
Dating back to the La Salle game, UR has held opponents' leading scorers to a combined 37-of-126 (29.3 percent) from the field.
Comeback Against Fordham
Richmond set a number of records in its heart-stopping win at Fordham on Jan. 10. The Spiders overcame a 15-point first-half deficit thanks to 17 straight points from Marshall Wood. UR used a 15-0 run over just 2:10 to take a lead before halftime.
UR scored its most points in a conference game since 2012. Marshall Wood's seven threes tied for the most threes in a game in program history. ShawnDre' Jones' 35 points were the most by a Spider since Darien Brothers in 2013.
Just a month later on Feb. 13, UR overcame a nine-point deficit with five minutes left to beat Fordham at home. It marked Richmond's biggest comeback in the second half this year, and the first time UR has won after trailing at halftime this season.
Nerdy Numbers
The Spiders have posted some impressive numbers in Ken Pomeroy's advanced statistics. UR's offensive efficiency of 113.0 ranks 26th in the country, while the team's effective FG percentage of 55.6 is 13th in the NCAA. The Spiders have dished an assist on 60.7 percent of made shots, ranking 32nd.
Despite playing some of the national leaders in defense and turnovers forced in West Virginia, ODU, Fordham and VCU, Richmond still boasts a turnover percentage of 15.2, which ranks 17th in the country.
Inside the arc, UR's offensive prowess has been outstanding. The Spiders are hitting 56.4 percent of their two-point shots (ranking seventh nationally).
