UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – In a rematch of last year's thrilling contest at Robins Stadium, the University of Richmond men's lacrosse team dropped a defensive battle, 7-2, to perennial Big East contender Marquette on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Dan Ginestro scored both goals for the Spiders and has now scored in all four of Richmond's games this year. His seven goals are tied with classmate Mitch Goldberg for the team lead.
Both teams would lock in defensively to start the contest with only four total shots in the first eight minutes, but a penalty late in the first quarter ignited the Golden Eagles.
Marquette would get two man-up goals late in the first period to take a 2-0 lead and add one more even strength goal mid-way through the second to push the advantage to three at the break.
Richmond would unleash the firing squad with Goldberg and Hatem leading the Spiders' 13 second-period shots, but none were able to find the back of the net.
The Golden Eagles added two more goals in the third period before the Spiders drew blood with eight minutes left in the stanza when Ginestro took a pass from freshman Teddy Hatfield and found the back of the net to make it a 5-1 contest.
Richmond would continue to pepper the net with shots, but Marquette goalie Jimmy Danaher was there to make the saves and keep the Spiders off the board.
Ginestro would score again in the final minute, but it wasn't enough as the Spiders fell, 7-2.
Richmond is back in action next Saturday when they travel to VMI for an in-state contest. Game time in Lexington is set for 6 p.m.
