FAIRFAX, Va. – Seniors Anna Abadias Morales and Katya Salas led the University of Richmond women's tennis team to a decisive 5-2 victory on the road at conference and in-state foe, George Mason, on Friday afternoon.
“George Mason is a much improved team. They battled us at every position,” head coach Mark Wesselink said. “I was happy with the way our players were able to rise to the occasion. This was a solid win early in the year for us and we hope to build on it.”
Abadias and Salas, along with sophomore Gaby Rosales, picked up victories on the singles and doubles courts to lead the way for the Spiders.
Richmond started the afternoon by sweeping doubles action to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Junior Kelsey Williams made it 2-0 in favor of the Spiders with straight set victory over Mason's Morgan Yang. Rosales followed close behind with a straight set win of her own, 7-6, 6-2 over Syndey Green at the second position in the lineup.
Abadias locked up the win for UR with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Brittany Pilkington at the top spot. Salas added a hard fought 2-6, 7-6, 10-4 win at the fifth spot to round out the scoring for the Spiders.
