03/12/2016 | Men's Lacrosse
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Only three years into its history, the University of Richmond men's lacrosse program is making a name for itself on the national stage.
The best start in school history continued for the Spiders on Saturday with a decisive 12-6 victory over Southern Conference foe Jacksonville in front of a great Robins Stadium crowd.
Juniors Dan Ginestro and Mitch Goldberg both had three goals apiece to lead the offensive attack. For Goldberg, it was his third straight hat trick, the first time the Damascus, Md. native had achieved that feat. Ginestro also was one point shy of his career-high in points with five, adding two assists to go along with his three goals in the contest.
Richmond, who entered the contest ranked eighth in the country in goals per game, stifled the Dolphins offensive attack, limiting Jacksonville to just seven shots and one goal in the first half. Reigning SoCon Defensive Player of the Week Benny Pugh had seven saves in over 55 minutes of action.
The Spiders took control early and often with Ginestro finding the back of the net less than four minutes into the contest and again six minutes later to give Richmond a 2-0 advantage with 5:35 to play in the first.
Six seconds after Ginestro's second goal, Peter Moran won the faceoff and blistered down the field for a goal of his own. Freshman Ryan Lee made it 4-0 just over two minutes later with a man-up goal off a beautiful assist from Jean-Luc Chetner.
After Jacksonville found the back of the net for the first and only time in the half, Goldberg got his first goal of the game off an assist from freshman Teddy Hatfield to give the Spiders a 5-1 lead after the first.
Richmond would add three more in the second with Goldberg, Chetner and freshman Adrian Nash all scoring and aiding the Spiders to a 8-1 halftime advantage.
The second half started much like the first with Richmond scoring three straight times to gain their largest lead of the year at 11-1.
Jacksonville would rally late, scoring five of the game's final six goals, but Goldberg's third goal of the contest came with 8:41 to play, and put the final nail in the coffin to secure Richmond's third-straight victory and a 6-1 start for the Spiders.
The Spiders are back in action next Saturday when they take on their second top-10 opponent in the past three games at tenth-ranked UNC. Game time in Chapel Hill is set for 7 p.m.
