Spiders Stay Unbeaten at Home with 6-5 Win Over Penn State

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Behind an eighth inning RBI single from Jansen Fraser, the University of Richmond baseball team defeated Penn State, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon.

D.J. Lee scored the first run of the day on a single from Kyle Adams and a Penn State miscue, putting the Spiders ahead 1-0. In the third, Lee laid down a bunt single advancing the runners. A sacrifice fly from Michael Morman plated Daniel Brumbaugh and put Richmond ahead, 2-0.

The Nittany Lions responded in the fourth as a leadoff single sparked some offense, as Penn State scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead. Richmond would even the score, 3-3, in the bottom of the frame as Fraser tripled and proceeded to score on a sacrifice fly from Jonathan de Marte.

In the sixth, Penn State laid down a safety squeeze to retake a 4-3 lead. The Nittany Lions continued to threaten as they loaded the bases, but reliever Matt Olson pitched out of the jam, to keep it a one-run ball game.

PSU tacked on a run in the seventh, to take a 5-3 advantage. Their lead was short-lived as the Spiders evened the score again in the bottom half. Brandon Johnson doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI single from Beckwith, cutting the deficit to one. Tyler Beckwith crossed the plate, evening the score at five, after Morman reached on another PSU miscue.

With the score tied at 5-5, Caleb Ward took the mound in the eighth and struck out the side. Fraser delivered his game-winning RBI to put the Spiders ahead 6-5 in the bottom half. Ward went back to the mound to close out the game in the ninth and sat down PSU in order.

Richmond returns to action tomorrow afternoon as they close out the Spider Invitational with Princeton at 3:00 p.m.
