UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – A sun-splashed Robins Stadium was filled by an energetic group of student-athletes ready to start a new season as the University of Richmond football team opened up spring football on Thursday afternoon.
Over 70 student-athletes strapped on their helmets bringing energy and plenty of enthusiasm in their first group practice since the Spiders' run to the FCS semifinals in December.
“It was great to be back out together again on a beautiful day,” Head Coach Danny Rocco said. “We've got a long way to go, but it was good start. We're going to work on having consistent energy throughout these spring practices.”
The over 90-minute workout focused on techniques, special teams, short-yardage execution, individual fundamentals and first and second down execution.
The Spiders return to the field on Sunday afternoon for another session open to Richmond fans.
New Coordinators Adjusting Well
Defensive coordinator Chris Cosh and offensive coordinator John Garrett got their first taste of Robins Stadium proving to be very active throughout the day with their new squad.
“When you have a system that works well and good players, it's a pretty easy transition,” Garrett said. “You really just continue to do what works and sprinkle in some things that work for the scheme and players that are already here that could make things even better.”
Busy Backfield
Spider fans will be focused on the backfield with the graduation of Jacobi Green and Seth Fisher, who combined for over 2,000 yards last season.
Rising junior Gordon Collins took the majority of the snaps with the first team, with rising senior James Pavik, rising sophomore Ganon Hingst and rising sophomore Jay Palmer also being very active during day one of camp.
Where's the Cupcakes?
Not only was it the first day of spring ball, it was also the 21st birthday of ising junior quarterback Kyle Lauletta.
“There's no place I'd rather be on my birthday than out here competing with these guys,” Lauletta said.
