Offense Powers Spiders Past VMI, 15-3 Tuesday

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The nation's top offense continued to shine as the University of Richmond baseball team pounded out 19 hits en route to a 15-3 victory over VMI on Tuesday afternoon at Pitt Field. The Spiders have now won five-straight games to improve to 7-1 on the young season.
Senior Michael Morman had a perfect day at the plate going 5-for-5 with three RBI. Seniors Tyler Beckwith and Doug Kraeger each had three hits while combining for five RBI.
The Spiders put up the first run on the scoreboard when Morman singled through the left side to plate D.J. Lee. VMI responded with a leadoff homer from Peyton Maddox, tying the game at 1-1.
In the fourth, the Keydets scored on a double from Nathan Eaton to take a 2-1 lead. Kyle Adams delivered an RBI single to even the score. Kurtis Brown crossed the plate to give Richmond a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Behind eight runs in the seventh, Richmond extended its lead, 11-3. Morman drove in Beckwith and Lee with an RBI single, Morman proceeded to score on a wild pitch to make it 6-2 in favor of the Spiders. Kraeger doubled down the left field line allowing Jake Wood and Brown to touch home. Kraeger and Bartlett capped off the scoring in the inning.
With RBI singles from Kraeger, Brandon Johnson, Bartlett and Beckwith, Richmond drove in four more runs to take a 15-3 lead over the Keydets.
On the mound, freshman Peter Bovenzi earned his first start and went a career long four innings and struck out four. Fellow freshman Jacob Lamb also had a career outing as the lefty tossed three innings and earned his first win.
Richmond returns to action on Friday in Winston-Salem at the Wake Forest Tournament. The Spiders will face Harvard at 10:00 a.m. on Friday before taking on Saint Peter's at 2:00 p.m. that afternoon.
