Doubleheader Sweep Extends Spiders' Win Streak to Seven

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The University of Richmond baseball team remained hot on Friday, sweeping a doubleheader with wins over Harvard (9-2) and Saint Peter's (12-6) by a combined score of 21-8.
Game 1: 9-2 win over Harvard
Behind a seven-run seventh inning, the Richmond Spiders defeated Harvard, 9-2, in the first game of their weekend in Winston-Salem.
Harvard struck first when Conor Quinn crossed the plate off a double from Drew Reid. Richmond responded in the fifth when Kurtis Brown doubled to left center and scored on a Harvard error to tie the game at 1-1.
Richmond's bats busted the game open in the seventh as the Spiders plated seven runs to take an 8-1 lead over the Crimson. Kyle Adams got things started with a leadoff double, Brown followed suit with a single up the middle before Doug Kraeger drew a walk to load the bases. Back-to-back singles from Daniel Brumbaugh and Brandon Johnson drove in a pair of runs, giving the Spiders a 3-1 lead. The Spiders had the bases loaded when D.J. Lee was hit by a pitch, allowing Brumbaugh to cross the plate.
With the bases still loaded, Michael Morman delivered a two-out single driving in a pair behind Adams doubled to extend Richmond's lead to 8-1 in the inning.
The Crimson responded with a home run from John Fallon in the eighth, but Kraeger answered with his second homer of the season, putting the Spiders ahead 9-2.
Layne Looney earned his first win as he took the mound in the top of the seventh in relief of Matt Olson. Looney allowed just one hit, one run and struck out one in his 1.2 inning of relief. Olson, who earned his second start of the young season, allowed just one run in his 6.1 innings of work.
Game 2: 12-6 win over Saint Peter's
The Spiders kept the momentum going against Saint Peter's in the afternoon tilt,
In the first inning, Richmond pushed across a pair of runs behind back-to-back singles from Adams and Brown. Tyler Beckwith blasted a two-run homer in the second to extend Richmond's lead to 4-0.
Two innings later, Beckwith doubled to left center to bring in Aaron Newman. Beckwith crossed the plate later in the frame off a Morman triple. Morman capped off the scoring on an RBI groundout by Adams, putting the Spiders ahead 7-0.
Saint Peter's got on the board in the bottom half of the frame with a solo home run from Jon Kristoffersen. Jason Midkiff reached on a fielder's choice allowing Nick Ciocco to score and cut Richmond's lead to five runs, 7-2.
In the fifth, Newman drew a bases loaded walk, allowing Kraeger to score before a Beckwith sacrifice fly scored Jansen Fraser. The Spiders added one more run when Morman reached on a fielder's choice and Zach Kurtz crossed the dish, giving Richmond a 10-2 lead.
The Peacocks added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fifth when Kristoffersen hit a two-run homer making it 10-4 in favor of Richmond.
Fraser hit a two-run home run in the sixth, extending the Spiders' lead to 12-4. Saint Peter's answered again, this time with a couple of runs in the bottom half behind singles from Nicholas Camilleri and Angel Perez, cutting the deficit to six runs, 12-6.
Saint Peter's threatened in the bottom of the ninth, but the Spiders held them at bay to secure the 12-6 victory.
On the mound, Dan Martinson improved to 3-0. He tossed six innings allowing the Peacocks six runs. Daniel Brumbaugh earned his first save as he tossed three innings of relief.
Up Next: The Spiders will return to the diamond at David F. Couch Ballpark tomorrow evening to face Towson. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
