Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short As Spiders Fall 5-3 To Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of Richmond baseball team's ninth inning rally fell just short on Tuesday evening, as the Spiders dropped a midweek contest, 5-3, to College of Charleston.

Richmond (9-4) struck first when Doug Kraeger delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Tyler Beckwith and put the Spiders ahead 1-0 in the opening frame of the contest.

Back-to-back singles from Jonathan de Marte and Jansen Fraser led off the second, as the Spiders looked to put more runs on the board. The Charleston starter, Michael Carpin, sat down a pair and got a fly out ended the inning, leaving the runners stranded. In the bottom of the frame, a double from Luke Manzo drove in a pair and put the Cougars ahead 2-1.

In the third, Charleston (8-4) got a pair across the plate. The Cougars added one more behind a sacrifice fly in the sixth to give Charleston a 5-1 lead.

The Spiders rallied in the ninth as Kyle Adams reached on an error and scored on another Charleston miscue, cutting the Cougars lead to three, 5-2. A sacrifice fly from Fraser allowed Kraeger to score to make it a 5-3 ball game. Richmond's rally came to a halt as Charleston reliever Carter Love struck out two, ending the game, and securing the Cougars' 5-3 win.

Freshman left-hander Jacob Lamb posted a career long outing on the mound as he tossed 5.2 innings and registered a career-high four strikeouts.

The Spiders will conclude their road swing tomorrow at The Citadel. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and will be available on the SoCon Digital Network.
