Spiders Drop 9-0 Decision To Perennial Power UVA

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Despite the gloomy weather, a great crowd jammed into Robins Stadium on Saturday to watch a growing in-state rivalry between the upstart University of Richmond men's lacrosse team and perennial national power University of Virginia men's lacrosse team.
The crowd of over 4,000 saw a defensive battle, in which the Cavaliers came out victorious, 9-0, in front of a televised audience.
“I'm extremely disappointed in our effort today, particularly on the offensive end,” Head Coach Dan Chemotti said. “I truly appreciate all the effort that was made to make today into a great event and I'm sorry we weren't able to capitalize on our end and put on a good show for all the fans that came out.”
Richmond battled the Cavaliers close in nearly every statistical category, 27-29 in shots, 27-31 in ground balls and winning the faceoff battle 7-of-13 times. Junior Brendan Hynes was outstanding for the Spiders causing five turnovers and picking up six ground balls on the day.
“One of our goals coming into today was to hold them under 10 and to do that against a team like Virginia isn't easy, but our defense once again stepped up and did a pretty good job. However, offensively, we just weren't good enough,” Chemotti added.
The Cavaliers opened the scoring early with Ryan Lukacovic finding the back of the net less than a minute into the contest. Richmond took a blow midway through the opening quarter when leading scorer Mitch Goldberg went down with an injury that kept him out of the rest of the contest.
“Mitch going down certainly hurts and changes some things, but every team deals with injuries at some time or another. We've got plenty of guys that can step up and help fill the void, but unfortunately that didn't happen today,” Chemotti added.
UVA would add another goal in the final minutes of the first and two more in the second to take a 4-0 lead into the halftime break.
Richmond came out of halftime firing with 10 shots in the third quarter, but none were able to get by UVA's Matt Barrett, who finished the afternoon with 12 saves.
The Cavaliers kept the pressure on scoring five more goals, while the Spiders continued to attack, but couldn't find the back of the net.
Richmond will be back in action next Saturday, April 9 when they travel to Furman for a key SoCon matchup. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
