Spiders Sweep Bonnies In A-10 First Round

MASON, Ohio – The University of Richmond women's tennis team was looking for some momentum entering the Atlantic 10 Championship, and that's exactly what it found.
Despite a time and venue change due to inclement weather, the Spiders got off to a hot start on Thursday, making quick work of St. Bonaventure and taking a 4-0 opening-round win.
“St. Bonaventure is a good team, and at different spots, they really played us tough,” head coach Mark Wesselink said. “We know which matches we can count on, and they players came through today that we thought would come through.”
Katya Salas picked up the first point for the Spiders in the No. 6 spot by defeating St. Bonaventure's Francesca Chin, 6-1, 6-0. Kelsey Williams then followed suit at No. 5, taking down Lauren Doversola, 6-2, 6-1.
Gaby Rosales won Richmond's third point at No. 2, defeating Gabriella Bowe, 6-2, 6-2 before Ana Ramirez mounted a comeback at No. 4 and clinched the match with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 win over Dominique Mortier.
The Spiders move on to the A-10 quarterfinals, where they will face fourth-seeded Saint Louis in a rematch of the March 4 contest where the Billikens swept Richmond, 7-0.
“Tomorrow everyone has to come through,” Wesselink said. “Saint Louis took it to us back in March, so we're hoping we can exact a little revenge tomorrow. I know it's going to be a tough match, and I know the team is looking forward to another shot at the Billikens.
Tomorrow's quarterfinal match is set for 10 a.m. at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
