UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Fresh off a Patriot League Championship performance, the Richmond Spiders Women's Golf team was selected to play in the 2016 NCAA Regional in Stanford, Calif., on May 5-7.
The Spiders will be making their first trip to the NCAA Regionals after winning the program's first conference championship in the school's 13 years of women's golf.
As a 17 seed, UR will be facing off against the region's top seed in USC, along with other notable programs including Stanford, Virginia, Wake Forest, North Carolina and Michigan State. Of the 18 teams, six will advance from each regional to compete in the NCAA National Championships in Oregon.
“It's been a rollercoaster of emotions,” head coach Ali Wright said. “I'm so happy for this particular group, from the seniors down to the freshmen and for all their hard work to come to fruition. But I'm also happy to be representing this great University at the NCAA's for the first time in women's golf.”
Wright won the Patriot League Coach of the Year in just her second season at the helm. She becomes just the third women's golf Coach of the Year in school history.
The Spiders will rely on the team's depth at the NCAA's, much like they did all season. Senior Jessica Lydia played through injury and sickness to finish third at the Patriot League Championships, while freshmen Sophie DiPetrillo and Annie Collom placed fourth and seventh, respectively.
Freshman Isabella Rusher posted a school-record under-par round earlier in the season, and sophomore Elsa Diaz was an All-Conference selection last year. Any of the five players have shown that they can boast a team-low round at any point.
