FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team split the doubleheader Saturday at George Mason. Behind a stellar outing from sophomore Keenan Bartlett, the Spiders took game one, 10-1, but dropped a 1-0 decision in the rubber match.
Game 1 - Richmond 10, George Mason 1
Bartlett was dealing in Saturday's first game. The right-hander matched a career long outing, tossing seven strong innings. Bartlett retired 13-straight batters including three consecutive strikeouts, holding George Mason to just four hits, en route to his second win of the season.
After three scoreless innings, Richmond broke open the game with four runs in the fourth. Kurtis Brown laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the base runners over into scoring position. Jansen Fraser knocked in Kyle Adams for the first run of the game. Caleb Ward delivered a two-out double which allowed Michael Morman to score. Kyle Schmidt capped off the four-run inning when he smashed a double down the left field line, plating two more and giving Richmond a 4-0 lead.
Brown crushed a two-run homer in the fifth, extending the Spiders' lead to 6-0. Richmond loaded the bases in the sixth and tacked on four more runs to make it a 10-0 ball game.
George Mason threatened in the bottom half of the sixth as they loaded the bases, but Bartlett pitched out of the jam with three-straight pop-ups to end the inning and protect Richmond's 10-0 lead.
The Patriots got on the board in the seventh with a run behind an RBI single from Frank Sturek. However that would be all the damage George Mason would do as Sean Collins tossed two scoreless innings in relief, securing Richmond's 10-1 victory.
Game 2 - George Mason 1, VCU 0
The Patriots (15-29, 4-11) looked to jump out to an early in the first after loading the bases, but Richmond got out of trouble as a fly out ended the inning.
Richmond looked to get on the board in the third following back-to-back singles from Aaron Newman and D.J. Lee, but the runners were left stranded keeping the game scoreless.
Behind a double in the sixth, George Mason pushed a run across to take a 1-0 lead.
The Spiders looked to respond in the seventh after Morman reached on an error, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. George Mason sat down three in a row to leave Morman on. Richmond looked to even the score again in the eighth when Ward led off with a single, and ended up on third, but the Spiders were unable to push him across the dish.
Richmond (23-18, 9-9) looked for a rally in the top of the ninth behind back-to-back singles from Morman and Brown. The runners advanced into scoring position off a sacrifice bunt from Fraser before Daniel Brumbaugh was intentionally walked to load the bases. George Mason's, Zach Mort, pitched out the jam striking out the final two batters to secure the Patriots' 1-0 win.
