Spiders Clinch Series at Elon With 10-5 Win

ELON, N.C. – The University of Richmond baseball team picked up right where it left off in game one at Elon, as the Spiders clinched the series with a 10-5 victory Friday night.

Jonathan de Marte and Michael Morman paced the Spiders offense with three hits apiece. On the hill, Dan Martinson tossed five strong innings, holding Elon to just four hits and one run while striking out six.

Tyler Beckwith led off the game with a single and scored the first run of the ball game off an RBI single from Morman.

The Spiders scored three in the second to take a 4-0 lead. De Marte started the inning off with a single to left, while fellow senior Aaron Newman laced a single to center to allow him to cross the plate. Morman capped off the inning with a two-run single putting Richmond ahead, 4-0.

Caleb Ward continued the offensive outburst in the third as he ripped a double down the left field line driving in de Marte and Zach Kurtz, giving the Spiders a 6-0 advantage.

The Spiders added a run in the fourth behind an RBI single from de Marte. Richmond tacked on three more runs in the fifth to take a 10-0 lead. Michael Strait's RBI double pushed across Beckwith for the first run of the inning, but that wouldn't be enough as Doug Kraeger and Jansen Fraser both had 2-out hits to extend Richmond's lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, Elon threatened looking to get on the scoreboard. The Phoenix plated one run on a sacrifice fly, but looked for more as they had the bases loaded but Martinson pitched out of the jam striking out back-to-back Elon batters.

The Phoenix looked for a late rally as they tacked on a run in the sixth on another sacrifice fly, before a solo shot from Kyle Jackson in the bottom of the eighth. The Phoenix added two more in the bottom of the ninth, cutting Richmond's lead to five. However, the Spiders would hold Elon off as Richmond clinched the series win.

Richmond will conclude the series with Elon in the team's 2016 regular season finale tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. as the Spiders await their postseason fate.
