Hynes Named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – All year long, the defense for the University of Richmond men's lacrosse team has proven to be the backbone of the Spiders.
Part of what's made the Spiders so good is the interchangeable parts defensively and how any given defender can step into the leading role on any given day. This past Saturday, it was junior Brendan Hynes and for his efforts, he was named Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
“Brendan's our play maker back there and this past weekend was no different with him coming up with a bunch of big plays,” Assistant Coach and Defensive Coordinator Paul Richards said.
Hynes posted season highs in ground balls with eight and caused turnovers with four in Richmond's 12-6 win over Mercer, which locked up its second straight double-digit win regular season.
With his eight ground balls this past weekend, he became the first Spider in program history to reach 200 career ground balls.
On the year, Hynes ranks sixth in the country and first in the SoCon, with over two caused turnovers per game. He currently leads the team with 57 ground balls and 31 caused turnovers.
Hynes and his teammates will be the second-seed in this week's SoCon Tournament at Robins Stadium. The Spiders will take on third-seeded High Point on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
