Spiders Sweep Senior Day Doubleheader In Style
05/07/2016 | Baseball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The senior class of the University of Richmond baseball team is making sure to get the most out of their final games at Pitt Field
On Senior Day, the veterans played key roles in the Spiders' sweep with Atlantic 10 foe, UMass. Richmond won the first game 14-4, and won the night-cap, 6-3, in 11 innings behind a Michael Morman three-run homer.
In the two games, seniors combined for eleven hits, ten runs and seven RBIs, while senior Zach Grossfeld tossed one of the best outings of his career in game two, racking up a career-high seven strikeouts.
Offensively, Morman led the Spiders with six hits on the day, while junior Kurtis Brown added five hits of his own in the two games.
“We have to keep coming out here and competing, every pitch, every at-bat is crucial for us in the Atlantic 10 race,” Head Coach Tracy Woodson said. “Our seniors have been a critical part of our success over the past four years so it was great to see them have a big impact today. We're going to need them to continue to step up as we hit the final stretch of games.”
Game 1: Richmond 14, UMass 4
The Spiders bats exploded in game one, pounding out 17 hits and 14 runs, the second-highest output of the season.
All nine guys in the lineup had at least one, including four multi-hit performances, led by Morman, who went 4-for-5 in the contest. Kyle Adams and Daniel Brumbaugh each had three hits in the win with Adams driving in four runs out of the leadoff spot.
UMass would get the scoring going early, scoring two in its half of the first, but an RBI single by Brown brought home Morman, who doubled earlier in the frame to make it a 2-1 lead for the Minutemen.
Richmond would take the lead for good in the home half of the second with Brumbaugh and Jansen Fraser ripping back to-back singles to lead off the frame. After back-to-back fielder's choices put runners on first and third, Adams laced a two-RBI double down the right field line and Morman followed with an RBI double of his own to give the Spiders a 4-2 cushion.
Keenan Barlett would settle into a groove on the mound, holding the Minutemen scoreless for the next three frames, while the Spiders added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth with RBIs from Adams and Morman yet again to make it a 6-2 lead.
UMass answered with two in the top of the fifth, but Richmond would put the game away in its half of the fifth with a sac fly from Brumbaugh, a two-RBI double from Schmidt and another RBI single from Adams to cap off the four-run inning and make it a 10-4 game.
Brumbaugh and Fraser collected RBIs in the bottom of the sixth, while D.J. Lee roped a two-RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to round out the scoring for the Spiders.
On the mound, Keenan Bartlett finished with seven strong innings of work, scattering seven hits and striking out six to pick up his third win of the season. Dalton Light came on to toss two scoreless frames to secure the victory.
Game 2: Richmond 6, UMass 3 (11 innings)
The Spiders started game two exactly where they ended game one, scoring runs. Morman laced a one-out single to left in the top of the first and two batters later, scored on a sac fly from fellow senior Doug Kraeger to make it a 1-0 game.
Grossfeld was dominant early for the Spiders, striking out four of the first six batters he faced and keeping UMass off the board for the first four innings.
In the bottom of the third, Richmond would add to its lead when Adams drew a leadoff walk and came around to score two batters later when Brown laced a double down the left field line to push the Spiders' lead to 2-0.
UMass would finally get to Grossfeld in the fifth when Cooper Mrowka sent a solo home run over the centerfield wall to make it a 2-1.
Two innings later, the Minutemen got another to tie the game at 2-2 and chased Grossfeld from the game after six-plus innings of solid work in his final home start as a Spider.
UMass grabbed the lead in the top of the eighth off an two-out RBI single from Ryan Lever to give the Minutemen a 3-2 lead.
The Spiders rallied in the ninth sending the tying run across the plate on Adams' sac fly to center, but UMass minimized the damage and kept the Richmond base runners stranded and sent the night-cap to extras.
In one of his final games at Pitt Field, Morman stepped in for some late-game, extra inning heroics, as he crushed the ball over the center field wall for a walk-off three-run homer in the home half of the eleventh. With Morman's three-run shot, the Spiders clinched the series and completed the Senior Day doubleheader sweep.
The Spiders will wrap-up the series with UMass tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. The game will be available on the Atlantic 10 Network.
