SEACAUCUS, N.J. – Growing up, every kid playing backyard baseball dreams of one day playing professionally. For Tyler Beckwith that dream became a reality on Saturday afternoon when the Washington Nationals selected him in the 17th round of the MLB Draft.
The Mount Airy, Md. native became the 38th Spider to be selected in the MLB Draft since 1995, and was the highest draft pick since 2010.
“We are really excited for Tyler and the opportunity he has to live out a dream and play professionally,” said head coach Tracy Woodson. “He's an extremely talented player who will be a tremendous ambassador for our program and this University in the next stage of his career.”
Beckwith had a stellar senior season for Richmond. He was the only Spider in 2016 to start all 52 games and he finished the season hitting .319. Beckwith was among the team leaders in nearly every offensive category. His nine career triples puts him eighth all-time in program history.
