UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Just three years into program history, the University of Richmond men's lacrosse team has made a name for themselves nationally with their play on the field, but its success is not limited to just the field.
The success has also come in the classroom, where three Spiders earned All-Academic accolades from the Southern Conference for their achievements. Junior Ryan Berning, along with sophomores Anthony Faraino and Garrett Smith were all honored.
“We take great pride in developing our student-athletes in the best people they can be and that includes challenging them in the classroom,” Head Coach Dan Chemotti said. “I'm proud of Ryan, Anthony and Garrett for leading the way academically.”
Berning is a junior defender from Cincinnati, Ohio who earned his second straight SoCon All-Academic team honor. He played in 13 games this spring and was a key member of a defensive unit that led the country in caused turnovers per game and ranked third in the country in goals against. He is a majoring in business administration.
Faraino played in 13 games for the Spiders this spring before suffering some nagging injuries that kept him sidelined late in the year. He tallied five points for the second straight season with two goals and three assists, while making three starts. He is also majoring in business administration.
Smith was a key contributor in the Spiders' midfield before suffering an injury. As a defensive mid, Smith helped Richmond rank third in the country in clearing percentage en route to its third straight appearance in the conference tournament championship game.
To earn a spot on the SoCon All-Academic team, a student-athlete must maintain above a 3.33 cumulative grade point average and play in a majority of a team's game in a single season. First-year players are not eligible for the honor.
