UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- With the start of the 2016 season in sight, the accolades have started to roll in. The University of Richmond field hockey team was tabbed as the preseason favorite in the Atlantic 10, while senior Kelly Quinn and junior Megan Miller were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
"It's great to see two of our standout players recognized in the pre-season all-conference team. I believe both will live up to expectation and be dominant players on the field," said head coach Gina Lucido. "Regardless of where we land in the pre-season poll, our mindset is to win the conference trophy and advance to the tournament. Yearly we are strongly tested and refined by our opponents in pursuit of that goal."
Richmond received 76 total points and four first-place votes to be picked as the preseason favorite. The Spiders led the way with Massachusetts a close second with 73 total votes as they also had four first-place votes, while Saint Joseph's (64) was picked to finish third. Davidson (45), Lock Haven (45), St. Francis (40), VCU (31), La Salle (21), and Saint Louis (10) round out the poll.
In the offseason, coach Lucido and the Spiders welcomed 10 freshmen to a squad that went 12-9 last season, with a 7-1 mark in conference play.
Last season, Quinn was named to the First Team All-Atlantic 10 while Miller earned a spot on the Second Team.
Quinn is the top returning scorer from a season ago. The senior scored a team-best seven goals and 17 points, ranking fifth in league-only stats in points. Her shot percentage of .467 was also a team-high as Quinn scored three game-winning goals for the Spiders.
Miller was a fixture for the Spiders in her sophomore season, and continues to be a vital piece of Richmond's attack. She started all 21 games with a goal in the season opener and three assists.
Richmond will open the season on Friday (August 26) at American. The game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and will be streamed for free by Campus Insider. For the Spiders' complete 2016 schedule, click here.
