Spiders Fall 3-1 in Season Opener at American

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Richmond field hockey team fell, 3-1 to American University in the team's season opener on Friday afternoon in the nation's capital.
American got things started quickly, grabbing a 2-0 lead. The Eagles got things started off a penalty corner from Rafaela Rubas. Less than two minutes later, they extended their lead 2-0 behind a goal from Leah DiGiandomenico.
"American pressured us quickly and asserted their will upon us going up two goals in under 10 minutes," said head coach Gina Lucido.
Richmond continued to add pressure in the first period, but the Spiders were unable to find the back of the cage.
Ten minutes into the second period, the Spiders looked to get on the board with a shot from sophomore Nealy Henderson, but the American goalkeeper kicked it out as the Eagles held onto their lead. The Spiders didn't back down as they continued to look for opportunities.
Inside the circle, sophomore Thalia Williamson and freshman Kaitlyn DaSilva fired off shots but both were blocked, until junior Megan Miller found an opening. Miller's goal cut American's lead to one with a little over 20 minutes left to play. Miller's goal marked the second consecutive season she scored a goal in the season opener – she did the same last season against American.
The Eagles looked to add some insurance on a corner of their own, but junior goalkeeper Amanda Hoyt denied the opportunity.
Senior Emma Johansson looked for the equalizer, but her shot hit the post. With under six minutes left to play, the Eagles added a goal to extend their lead to 3-1.
"The good report is that we can fix these things and bring a different team dynamic to the field on Sunday," Lucido said. "The season has just started and we turn the page to Drexel."
Richmond will continue their opening weekend on the road, as the Spiders travel to Philadelphia next for a Sunday contest with Drexel. The game is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. and will be live streamed for free.
