Spiders And Phoenix Battle To 3-3 Draw
09/11/2016 | Women's Soccer
ELON, N.C. – Senior captain Meaghan Carrigan scored twice for the University of Richmond women's soccer team, but the Spiders were unable to come out with the win, tying host Elon, 3-3, on Sunday afternoon.
“I'm happy with the amount of attack that we generated today,” Spider head coach Peter Albright said. “Elon is very direct and we allowed them to get behind us a couple of times too many.”
Carrigan started the scoring when she sent a long, curling shot past the Elon goalkeeper in the 13th minute of play off of an assist from junior Lexi Prillaman.
Elon leveled the score in the 32nd minute when Nyah Spearman sent the ball past Richmond goalie Carlie Blessing, and then took the lead 10 minutes later off of a goal from Alexis de Groot.
The Spiders kept the pressure on as the first half wound down, and were able to tie the game in the 44th minute when senior Lindsay Egbers sent a corner kick to freshman Alyssa Walker, who headed the ball into the net to make the score 2-2 entering halftime.
Carrigan scored her second goal of the game to give Richmond a 3-2 lead in the 53rd minute when she received the ball from freshman Brooke Beam and sent the ball into the net from 20 yards out.
Elon evened the score again in the 82nd minute when Erin Tanhauser sent the ball past Blessing. Neither team would score in the closing minutes, sending the Spiders into overtime for the second time this season.
Richmond was on the offensive in the first overtime period, but was unable to convert, sending the game into a second sudden-victory overtime period.
The Spiders had a chance in the second overtime when Elon was called for a handball in the box, but Elon goalie Katelyn Fowler saved Prillaman's attempt to keep the score knotted at 3-3.
The Spiders outshot the Phoenix, 24-14, while both teams finished the game with seven corner attempts. Blessing recorded three saves in her first-career start.
“Meaghan had a great game, even without her two goals,” Albright added of Carrigan. “She is getting back in to form. Alexis Pringle, Alyssa Walker, Olivia Aha and Lindsey Williams also had very good performances for us today.”
Richmond will have the week off from competition, and will return to action on Tuesday, September 20, when they head to Washington, D.C., to face American. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
