Spiders Rout American In 4-0 Shutout
09/20/2016 | Women's Soccer
WASHINGTON, D.C.— It took nearly 35 minutes for the University of Richmond women's soccer team to get on the board, but the Spiders scored three times in a span of nine minutes in the second half to take a commanding 4-0 win over host American on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Meaghan Carrigan and junior Lexi Prillaman both scored twice for the Spiders.
“This was a good team win,” head coach Peter Albright said. “AU was hard to break down, but Meg and Lexi were efficient, and once we got the lead, the game opened up.”
Prillaman started the scoring in the 33rd minute when she received a ball from Olivia Aha on the far left side of the goal, then sent it past the American goalie at a sharp angle to give the Spiders a 1-0 lead.
The score would hold at 1-0 entering halftime, but the Spiders (5-2-1) doubled their lead two and a half minutes into the second half when Lindsey Williams sent the ball through to Carrigan, who drilled the ball past the American (1-9-0) keeper for the 2-0 lead.
Prillaman would get on the board again in the 56th minute, when Alexis Pringle sent the ball to Alyssa Walker in the center of the field, who pass a long ball to Prillaman for her to dink over the top of the American goalie.
Just 98 second later, Carrigan scored her second of the game when she received a back pass from Prillaman inside of the box and sent the ball into the goal for a 4-0 Richmond lead.
The Spiders outshot the Eagles 20-7, and finished with five corners to American's zero. Carlie Blessing finished with five saves in her first career shutout.
“We also got strong performances from Williams and Aha, who both had assists today,” Albright added. “We are excited about the upcoming challenges, and are toughening up.”
Richmond returns home for its next challenge against No. 4 West Virginia. Game time at Robins Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised on WTVR Digital Channel 6.3, which is available in Central Virginia on Comcast Channel 206 and Verizon FIOS Channel 466.
