Spiders Battle, But Fall To No. 4 Mountaineers, 4-1

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Despite added pressure in the second half and a textbook penalty kick goal by senior Meaghan Carrigan, the University of Richmond women's soccer team fell to No. 4 West Virginia, 4-1, on Friday night at Robins Stadium.
"I was very proud of the Spiders tonight," head coach Peter Albright said. "We gave a great performance and great effort. I thought we were a little unlucky at times, but West Virginia is a great team."
West Virginia took an early lead just 47 seconds into the game when Heather Kaleiohi scored her fourth goal of the season off of an assist from Bianca St. Georges.
The Spiders settled down and bounced back, finding their shape and holding off a quick Mountaineer offense. Richmond was able to keep their opponent off of the board for almost the entire rest of the half, but West Virginia's Hannah Abraham was able score in the 42nd minute to give her team a two-goal lead into halftime.
Richmond mounted a comeback in the second half when Carrigan scored off of a penalty kick in the 56th minute to cut the WVU lead to 2-1 when the West Virginia goalie handled the ball outside of the box.
West Virginia would score again just over a minute later off of a rocket shot by Carla Portillo to take a 3-1 lead. The Mountaineers would then round out their scoring in the 85th minute with a goal by Jade Gentile to make the final score 4-1.
"We had a good goal, and I thought we could have had two or three others," Albright added. "I'm really proud of the way we played and I have no regrets. I love playing top level teams."
The Mountaineers held a 23-11 edge in shots, along with a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman Carlie Blessing finished the night with seven saves in goal for the Spiders.
Richmond begins Atlantic 10 Conference play on Thursday night when it travels to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to take on Duquesne. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
