UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Conference play brings out the best in competition.
That was on display on Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field when the University of Richmond field hockey team dropped a hard-fought battle to Lock Haven falling in a shootout where the Bald Eagles outscored Richmond 4-3, to take a 2-1 victory. Both teams scored a goal a piece during regulation and two overtimes.
Sophomore Thalia Williamson scored for the second time on the weekend for the Spiders' goal in regulation. Richmond dominated corners, drawing 16 on the day and outshot the Bald Eagles, 18-11 in the contest.
Richmond came out aggressive in the first half, dominating the tempo and possession, while firing off nine shots and holding Lock Haven to just two.
The Spiders nearly took a lead into the half when they drew an extended corner, but back-to-back shots were turned away as the game remained scoreless at the break.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Williamson gathered a rebound off a corner and blasted it home to give Richmond a 1-0 advantage.
Lock Haven wouldn't go away quietly as Tamia Roach dribbled inside the right side of the circle and got one into the back of the cage to tie the game at 1-1.
Neither team could muster any chances in the end of regulation as the game headed to overtime.
Richmond would draw to quick corners in the first overtime, but couldn't convert as the game moved to the second OT period.
The Spiders put pressure on Lock Haven in the final 10 minutes of the second overtime, twice nearly ending the contest, but both chances were turned away by Paige Stuppy, the LHU keeper who finished with 10 saves on the afternoon.
Amanda Hoyt gave Richmond an early advantage in the shootout, turning away the first two chances by Lock Haven, but the Bald Eagles hung tough and got the game winner on the sixth period of the shootout to clinch the victory.
Richmond returns to action next weekend when they travel to Philadelphia. First up is Saint Joseph's on Friday at 4 p.m.
