Spider Youth Shine in Saturday Action
01/21/2017 | Women's Swimming & Diving
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Head Coach Matt Barany is big on the development process of his Spider Swim & Dive program. The youth of the team showed the early signs of that development as they shined in Saturday action against Atlantic 10 foes, La Salle and Fordham.
Freshmen Virginia Marsh and Hannah Gouger each won two races while sophomore Morgan Soulia also won a pair of events. Junior Erin Barry picked up a win in the meet as well.
The Spiders defeated La Salle, 210-89 and narrowly lost to Fordham, 153-146.
Marsh clocked a 1:51.96 in the 200 free, four seconds ahead of teammate Annie Lane, to win her first event of the day. In the 50 free, she narrowly defeated Fordham's Tara Brunner with a time of 24.65.
Gouger continues to shine in the back stroke events as she posted the fastest times in both the 100 and 200 races. In the 100 event, she turned in a time of 57.10 to claim the top spot with teammate Maggie Pope finishing close behind in second. The Cockeysville, Md. native out-touched Fordham's Cat Alabanz by one second to win the 200 back stroke with a time of 2:04.89.
With a year of collegiate swimming under a belt, Soulia has had a breakout year. The sophomore won both the 100 breast stroke in a season-best time of 1:06.15 and the 200 IM (2:08.33) in Saturday's action.
In a time of 2:22.76, Barry claimed the top spot in the 200 breast stroke, while classmate Laura Rokop notched two second-place finishes in the diving events. Rokop finished with a score of 253.95 in the 1M event and 245.45 on the 3M board.
Richmond closes out the regular season next Saturday (January 28) at Rutgers before the Atlantic 10 Championship, which is scheduled for February 15-18.
