NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Freshman Virginia Marsh has been gotten off the blocks quickly in her first season with the Spider Swim & Dive program. Following a stellar weekend, Marsh was named the Atlantic 10's Rookie of the Week.
Marsh joins classmate Hannah Gouger, who won the weekly award earlier this season.
On Saturday against Atlantic 10 foes, La Salle and Fordham, Marsh won a pair of races. Her first win of the day came in the 200 free where she clocked a 1:51.96, four seconds ahead of teammate Annie Lane. In the 50 free, Marsh touched the wall at 24.65, narrowly defeating Fordham's Tara Brunner.
Prior to picking up wins on Saturday, Marsh notched a pair of top-three performances against Villanova in both the 100 and 500 freestyle events at 52.23 and 5:05.50, respectively.
In the A-10, Marsh has the second fastest time in the 200 free (1:50.66) and the third fastest time in the 100 free (51.14). She also ranks in the top-10 in the 1,000 free. With those times, the High Point, N.C. native is currently seventh in the Spiders record book in the 200 free and 10th in the 100 free.
Marsh and the Spiders will return to action on Saturday at Rutgers in the final tune-up before the Atlantic 10 Championship, which begins on February 15.
