Spiders Hold off Lafayette for 5-3 Victory Sunday

EASTON, Pa. – The Spider Hockey team held off a late rally on Sunday afternoon to defeat Lafayette, 5-3. The Spiders have now won four of their last five games. Freshman Florentine Beelaerts van Blokland led Richmond with two goals on Sunday. The Doorn, The Netherlands native leads the team with seven goals.
Beelaerts van Blokland put the Spiders on the board off a penalty, but Lafayette answered very quickly tying the game at 1-1. Before the break, senior Kasey Gilbride drilled a shot into the back of the cage off a corner to give the Spiders a 2-1 advantage.
Senior Megan Miller and junior Olivia Hubert connected with Beelaerts van Blokland in the second half to extend Richmond's lead, 3-1.
With back-to-back goals from senior Katrina Balatgek and freshman Cadera Smith, the Spiders took a commanding 5-1 lead.
Lafayette would not go quietly as the Leopards scored two unanswered goals to cut the Spiders lead to two, 5-3 with 12 minutes remaining. However, the Spiders were able to hold off the rally and secure a 5-3 victory and improve to 6-9 (4-1) on the season.
The Spiders return to Crenshaw Field for the final two home games of the season next weekend. First on the docket is La Salle on Friday, October 20. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. and will be available on the Atlantic 10 Network/SpiderTV.
