10/17/2017 | Women's Golf
HAYESVILLE, N.C. – A new standard has been set for the University of Richmond women's golf program. On Tuesday afternoon, at the Bill Berg Invitational, the Spiders closed out their third tournament championship in as many events this season.
Richmond has now won three events in the same season for the first time in program history and has done so in style. Richmond fired a +46, 910, highlighted by a final round 299, which matches the 13th best single-round team score of all-time. The 910 score was 14 strokes clear of second place which means the Spiders have now bested the second place teams in their three events by a combined 54 strokes.
Junior Isabella Rusher was stellar in the final round of the event. She carded a -4, 68 which is a personal best and matches the lowest, single-round score in program history set just a couple of weeks ago by teammate Elsa Diaz. Rusher is now the only golfer in program history to score three rounds of 69 or better in her career. She closed the tournament with rounds of 76-80-68, 224 (+8) to finish in a tie for third overall.
Just behind Rusher was Sophie DiPetrillo (75-77-73) who carded a +9, 225 to finish in a tie for fifth and earn her third top 10 in as many events. She is the only Spider to accomplish that feat this year.
Freshman Lizzie Reedy continues to impress during her debut campaign. She went 76-73-80, 229 to finish +13 and in sole possession of 12th overall. While she missed out on her third-straight top-10 she does remain perfect in top-20 efforts. Her second round +1, 73 matches her career-low round.
Rounding out the Spider scoring was Annie Collom (75-79-82) who finished in a tie for 28th with a +20, 236 as well as Elsa Diaz (82-84-78) who closed in a tie for 51st with a +28, 244. Freshman Ally Steffen (85-90-91, 266) competed as an individual.
Just one more event this fall awaits the Spiders and it will be their toughest test to date. This weekend Richmond will travel to Simpsonville, Ky. for the Louisville Cardinal Cup and will compete with against a stacked field. In the same event last season the Spiders finished 15th.
