Head-to-Head Competition with Duquesne Goes to the Wire

RICHMOND, Va. – On the second day of the Richmond Duals, it came down to the wire as the Spiders and Duquesne went head-to-head in the pool. The score was tied going into the final event, the 200 free relay, where the Spiders touched the wall at 1:37.28 just behind the Dukes, who clocked a 1:36.31. Duquesne won the dual, 154-145. Senior Annie Lane continued her winning ways picking up two more wins today to add to the three yesterday, and senior diver Laura Rokop had an NCAA Zone qualifying score in the 1-meter event.Â

For the second-straight day, the Spiders swept both diving events. On the 1-meter board, Rokop led the way with a score of 266.35, which qualifies her for NCAA Zones. Sophomores Sydney Weiskopf (250.85) and Maddy Chao (250.50) took second and third respectively. In the 3-meter event Weiskopf posing the top score of 261.35. Freshman Alex Beran (255.0) took second and Rokop (248.35) rounded out the top three.Â

Lane and junior Nicole Piercy cruised to the top-two spots in the 1,650 free at 17:38.91 and 17:41.76, respectively, to start the second day of action at the Collegiate Aquatics Center. Lane also took second in the 200 free with a time of 1:55.25, just behind Duquesne's Lexi Santer (1:54.67). Junior Lauren Wallace (1:57.11) recorded a top-five finish in the event.

The duo of Lane and Piercy raced to first and second in the 500 free too. Lane touched the wall at 5:08.78 with Piercy at 5:09.67. Wallace registered another top-five finish in the event at 5:15.47 and freshman Sarah Mautino finished in seventh (5:21.02).

In the 100 backstroke, the Spiders put three swimmers in the top five with freshman Jordan Kohut taking first. She touched the wall at 56.06 with sophomore Hannah Gouger (57.13) taking third and freshman Ellie Ronan (59.15) placing fourth.

Kohut placed second in the 50 free (24.50) just behind the Dukes' Kristi McKnight at 24.19. Classmate Mallory Shake rounded out the top-five at 24.74.

Senior Erin Barry won the 200 breast stroke in a time of 2:21.63 as sophomore Lexie Gilbert (2:30.59) and senior Emily Landon (2:35.03) finished in sixth and seventh, respectively. Sophomore Virginia Marsh claimed the top spot in the 100 free in a time of 52.45 beating out three Dukes. Kohut and Brynn Robertson finished in sixth and seventh, respectively. In the 400 IM, Gilbert was the first Spider to touch the wall to place third at 4:33.57. Junior Morgan Soulia placed fourth in the event at 4:35.32. Soulia came in just behind Duquesne's Abby Stauffer at 1:06.23 to take second in her heat of the 100 breast stroke while Barry (1:06.95) finished third. Gilbert was also the top Spider finisher in the 200 fly in a time of 2:11.02 to take fourth and Wallace rounded out the top five at 2:13.14.
In the 200 backstroke, senior Hannah Verrette came in at 2:04.72 to place second with Gouger (2:06.59), Ronan (2:07.95) and Mautino (2:10.20) close behind. Richmond's 400 medley relay (Kohut, Soulia, Gouger, Marsh) clocked a time of 3:52.37 to edge out the Dukes 3:52.43.

The Spiders will take some time away from competition before the Patriot Invitational, which is a three-day meet. Action at the invitational begins on Thursday, November 16.Â
