Six Spiders, Three Freshmen Reach Double Figures in Big Win over Savannah State, 100-63
11/22/2017 | Women's Basketball
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (4-2) was not messing around on Wednesday afternoon. After suffering a tough loss to Florida on Tuesday, the Spiders came out and put forth their best offensive and defensive efforts of the season to knock off Savannah State (1-3) in impressive fashion, 100-63.
Wednesday's scoring explosion marked the first time since Dec. 8, 2012 that the Spiders eclipsed the 100-point plateau and used six double-digit efforts to do it. Kailyn Fee led the Spiders with 21 points on 7-14 from long range. Her seven triples are tied for the second-most in a single game in program history.
Fellow freshmen Alex Parson (10 pts) and Tonysha Curry (12 pts) joined her in double figures. Curry's effort is by far the best of her young career and added six rebounds to sweeten the pot. She was one of five Spiders to pull down at least six boards.
Micaela Parson scored 12 points to keep her streak of reaching double digits in all six games this season alive and Amy Duggan scored 10 in the first quarter, ultimately finishing with a career-high 13 with a career-high three made triples.
All eleven Spiders that saw the floor found at least 10 minutes of action and in doing so held the Tigers to 34 percent shooting. Both the 63 points and the field goal percentage are both season lows for the Spider defense.
Karleigh Wike and Amy Duggan converted each of the first two shot attempts for the Spiders and they were off and running. Duggan wound up going 4-4 in the first quarter with a pair of triples to notch a new career-high pretty quickly. Kylie Murphree assisted Duggan on her second made long ball and in doing so moved into sixth on the all-time assist list. The Spiders forced five turnovers in the first quarter that led to nine points on the offensive end that helped build a 25-14 lead by the time the buzzer sounded.
Tonysha Curry bookended the second quarter for the Spiders by starting it with a layup in transition and closing it with a long three ball off glass as the clock expired. Richmond made five triples in the second quarter, three off which came off the hands of Kailyn Fee who had one on the first quarter to give her a team-leading 12 points at the break. Fee's freshman running mate Alex Parson was able to grind out 10 points of her own in 12 minutes giving the Spiders three in double figures for the fourth time already this season.
The Spiders shot 46 percent in the first half and was 10-21 from long range while holding the Tigers to 28 percent from the floor to build a staggering 48-32 advantage at the break.
The two sides traded buckets early in the third quarter and a mini Tiger run late made it an 11-point game with 1:38 to go in the quarter. A layup by Alicia Hudalla put a stop to it and that would be as close as Savannah State would come in this one. The Spiders built up a 19-point advantage by the end of the frame.
Entering the fourth the Spiders had never scored 30 points in any single quarter since the rule change prior to the 2015-16 season. They got exactly that to reach triple digits for the first time in a long time while still maintaining enough focus on defense to hold Savannah State to a season-low total for a Spider opponent.
The Spiders will conclude their trip to Savannah tomorrow afternoon when it takes on Horizon league power Wright State at 2 p.m.
