Micaela Parson Eclipses 1,000 Points in Loss to Quinnipiac, 65-81
12/01/2017 | Women's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond (5-5) senior guard Micaela Parson needed 24 points on Friday night to become the 24th member of the program's 1,000-point club; she got 25 and history was made in a 65-81 loss to Quinnipiac (3-3).
Friday's effort marked the fourth time already this season and 10th time in her career that Micaela has eclipsed the 20-point plateau. She is the 11th individual to play under head coach Michael Shafer to reach 1,000 points and she did so in the 98th game of her career. The senior is now averaging a career-best 18.2 points per game this season, which is a full eight points higher than her career average (10.2). She also added five rebounds, two assists and became the first Spider this season to secure five steals in a game.
Joining Micaela in double-figures for the seventh time this season was her younger sister Alex who dropped in 12 points on 6-18 shooting to go with four rebounds, three assists and a steal. The duo continues to live up to the title of most prolific scoring pair of sisters in the country.
The Spider defense turned Quinnipiac over 18 times with 11 steals, which are tied for second-most in a single game this season. The Bobcats ability to get to the free throw line made up the difference in this one as Quinnipiac went 26-34 from the line while Richmond was 13-16.
Quinnipiac lived up to its pedigree in the early going by jumping out to a 10-2 lead by the 7:16 mark but the Spiders had answers. Dee Hatcher checked and buried a runner in the lane and from there the Spiders got rolling. Micaela tossed in her first three ball of the game as part of a personal 7-0 run to push the Spiders into the lead, 11-10. Quinnipiac answered with a 9-2 run of its own but Alex knocked in a pull-up jumper in the lane to stop the bleeding before the quarter came to a close with her team trailing, 19-14.
Richmond trailed by as many as 11 points, 25-14, with 8:19 to go in the half before embarking on a 9-0 run that brought it within two of the Bobcats and forcing the visiting side into a timeout in front of a frenzied Robins Center Crowd. Quinnpiac stopped the run with a pair of free throws but Micaela answered with a long triple to make it a one-point game with 4:02 to go in the half. Basket trading ensued but the Spiders never made it over the hump to take the lead and trailed by five, 39-34, at the break.
Micaela scored 19 of her game-high 25 points in the first half on an efficient 7-9 shooting from the floor that included 2-2 from deep to go with 3-4 from the free throw line. She also had an assist, two steals and three rebounds at that point while resting just five points shy of the 1,000-point milestone.
No other Spider had more than four points but the team managed to shoot 46.4 percent for the half and help the Bobcats to 42.9 percent shooting to keep this one within reach.
Quinnipiac jumped out to a 10-point advantage by the 6:14 mark of the third and the Spiders never truly recovered fully. Alex Parson did her part to take over in the second half, scoring eight of her 12 points over the final two frames. Richmond trailed by double-digits on multiple occasions and was consistently able to push back and get it down to six or eight but foul trouble began to mount and the Bobcats capitalized.
With 7:34 to go in the game, Alex hit a jumper in the lane to cut it to an eight-point game but that was as close as the Spiders came in this one. More back-and-forth began and the Spiders never quite broke through that glass ceiling being fortified by the Bobcats. At the 1:48 mark, Micaela knocked in a pair of free throws to push her past the 1,000-point threshold and made it a 10-point game but Quinnipiac made its free throws down the stretch to seal the game.
Richmond will remain home for a third straight game and will welcome Navy on Wednesday (Dec. 6) for a 7 p.m. tip inside the Robins Center.
