Spiders Announce Loaded 2018 Slate
12/12/2017 | Men's Lacrosse
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The old adage goes, "to be the best, you have to beat the best."
Head Coach Dan Chemotti of the University of Richmond men's lacrosse program has never steered his student-athletes away from a challenge, whether that be on the field or in the classroom.
The 2018 schedule is no different as the Spiders will face four teams (Notre Dame, Duke, North Carolina and Air Force) that finished in the top-20 nationally and four teams (Notre Dame, Duke, North Carolina and Virginia) that have played in the Final Four within the past five years.
"We pride ourselves with playing against the best competition possible and this year's schedule is no different with historically, some of the best programs in the country," Chemotti said. "We know that every time we step on the field we're going to have to bring our best and that will go a long way, especially when it comes time for the conference season."
Two exhibition dates will get the Spiders started in 2018, beginning with Navy and Christopher Newport coming to Robins Stadium on January 27, followed a week later with a trip to Loyola on February 3.
The regular season gets underway when Richmond travels to UMBC on Saturday, February 10. The Retrievers have made the NCAA Tournament three times in the past 10 years.
The Spiders' home slate begins on February 17, when the Bison of Bucknell, a perennial contender in the patriot League, visit Robins Stadium. A visit from Mount St. Mary's follows on Tuesday, February 20.
Back-to-back road trips to national powers Notre Dame (finished #8 in 2017 poll) and Duke (finished #7 in 2017 poll) are set for Saturday, Feb. 24 and Saturday, March 3.
The SoCon season begins with a road trip to VMI on Saturday, March 10, which is followed by yet another national power, UNC, coming to Robins Stadium on Wednesday, March 14.
Richmond returns to SoCon play with a road trip to Furman (March 17) and a home game against High Point (March 24).
The five-year in-state rivalry with Virginia is renewed on Saturday, March 31 when the Spiders travel to Charlottesville.
Richmond rounds out SoCon play with home dates against Bellarmine (April 7), Jacksonville (April 14) and Air Force (April 28), along with a road trip to Mercer (April 21).
A top-four finish for the Spiders would earn them a trip to the SoCon Tournament, which is hosted in Robins Stadium on May 3 and 5.
