UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Facing off against the conference's top-scoring offense is a tall task. Facing them with one of the youngest teams in the league makes it even more difficult.
Neither of those mattered to the University of Richmond men's basketball team who used a stifling defensive effort and a career day from sophomore Nick Sherod to take down perennial Atlantic 10 contender Davidson, 69-58, on Saturday afternoon at the Robins Center.
Davidson (5-7, 0-1 A-10) came into the contest averaging 79.3 points per game, but the Spiders (3-10, 1-0 A-10) held the Wildcats to just 36.2-percent from the field and 29.6-percent from long range. The 58 points is the fewest in the past 29 games for the Wildcats.
"I really think we're just getting better each day. Our communication is better, our grit and determination is better, all of that factors into a better effort on the defensive end," Head Coach Chris Mooney said.
Sherod had a career-high 22 points on 7-of-10 from the field and 4-of-6 from long range. He also grabbed nine rebounds, which also ties a career-high for the sophomore. He has now connected on 21-of-38 (.553) from long range in his past seven games.
Khwan Fore, De'Monte Buckingham and Grant Golden all chipped in 12 points to round out four Spiders in double-figures. Golden posted his second-straight double-double with 10 rebounds to go along with his 12 points.
"We knew that this was somewhat of a new season for us, everyone starts 0-0 in conference play," Sherod said. "I feel like we continue to get better and that's what our mindset has to be every time we step on the court."
The first half was a defensive effort on both sides with the Wildcats taking a 29-25 lead into the break after neither team shot over 40-percent in the stanza.
Richmond blitzed the Wildcats with three consecutive baskets and a 6-0 run in the first 1:35 of the second half to take a 31-29 lead. After the teams traded baskets to even the score at 32 with 16:01 to play, the Spiders would never trail again.
The hometown boys, Sherod and Buckingham, combined for 18 points for the final 15 minutes, while the defense shut down the A-10's leading scorer Peyton Aldridge (21.3 ppg) to just 4-of-15 from the field.
Richmond returns to action on Wednesday night (Jan. 3) when it heads to the Bronx, N.Y. to take on Fordham. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
