Buckingham Dominates Boards But Spiders Fall In OT To Fordham
01/03/2018 | Men's Basketball
The Spiders staged a late rally Wednesday night at Fordham to force overtime but weren't able to keep pace with the Rams in the extra period, falling 69-65.
After briefly leading early in the second half, Richmond trailed by five with less than five minutes remaining in regulation at Rose Hill Gym before a three-pointer and layup from De'Monte Buckingham pulled the Spiders within two.
Following a missed three-pointer by the Rams, Buckingham grabbed the rebound with 1:22 remaining, giving the Spiders a chance to tie or take the lead.
After Nathan Cayo missed a corner three-pointer, Buckingham tapped the offensive rebound to Jacob Gilyard, whose three-pointer bounced in and out of the basket.
When Fordham couldn't corral the rebound, the Spiders retained possession, still trailing 60-58. Given a third chance, Richmond tied the game at 60 as Gilyard drove to the rim and hit a windmill layup with 21 seconds remaining.
Another defensive stop by the Spiders forced the game to overtime. In the extra period, Richmond was better from the foul line, hitting five of eight free throws after connecting on just four of 13 in regulation, but not from the field, missing all five of its field goal attempts, four from three-point range.
De'Monte Buckingham finished with a game-high 16 rebounds, a career best and the most by a Spider since Terry Allen grabbed 16 against UMass on February 6, 2016. Buckingham, who scored 10 points to secure his second career double-double, was one of three Spiders in double figures.
Julius Johnson led Richmond with a team-high 12 points off the bench and Nathan Cayo added a career-high 10 points. Richmond got 27 points from its bench, the most in a game in more than two seasons and more points than the Spiders bench scored in its previous three games combined.
Richmond is now 1-1 in Atlantic 10 play and will continue its conference road trip Saturday at Saint Louis. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET and the game can be seen locally on CBS 6 in Richmond.
