Spiders Can't Hold Lead, Fall To Old Dominion
12/06/2017 | Men's Basketball
35 good minutes. Five bad.Â
Â
Richmond went toe-to-toe with Old Dominion for the majority of the game Wednesday night, but couldn't overcome a 20-0 run by the Monarchs over the first five minutes of the second half and dropped a 79-60 decision to its in-state rival.
Â
Redshirt junior Solly Stansbury recorded a career-high 12 points, tied for the most by any Spider and the most by a Richmond player coming off the bench this season. Grant Golden also scored 12 for Richmond before fouling out with 1:26 remaining.Â
After a promising start – two of the Spiders first three possessions ended with back-door layups by Nick Sherod and Khwan Fore – Old Dominion responded with a mix of interior scoring and long-range shooting to build an eight-point lead early in the first half. But the Spiders rallied to lead by as many as five and take a two-point advantage at halftime behind nine points, four rebounds, and four assists from De'Monte Buckingham.
Â
However, Richmond had few answers after intermission as Old Dominion shot out of its locker room scored the game's first 20 points to start the second half and go up 51-33 with just over 15 minutes remaining, a lead the Spiders were unable to threaten down the stretch.
Â
The Monarchs shooting remained on-target for the entire final 20 minutes, as Old Dominion shot 60 percent from the field in the second half, including six-of-11 from three-point range.
Â
As a team, the Spiders tied a season high with 19 assists with six of them coming from Jacob Gilyard, a career best and the most by a Spiders freshman since Buckingham had eight against UMass last March.
Â
After combining for eight total points in losses to Vermont and Wake Forest, Richmond's bench scored 20 points on Wednesday, the most bench points for the Spiders since December 17, 2016 against Texas Tech (also 20).
Â
Richmond returns to action Saturday evening at the Robins Center against another in-state-rival, James Madison. Tip time is scheduled for 6 PM ET.
