EMMITSBURG, Md. – Winning on the road is a difficult task no matter what sport it is.
The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team found that out on Tuesday afternoon as the Spiders gutted out a tough road test against Mount St. Mary's, pulling out the 10-7 win to improve to 3-0 for the second consecutive season.
Sophomore Ryan Lee continued his hot start to the 2017 season, posting his third consecutive hat trick in the win. It marks just the fourth time in program history that a Spider has posted three consecutive games of three goals or more.
Classmate Teddy Hatfield had two goals and one assist, while senior Dan Ginestro had a goal an assist to each tally three points on the afternoon.
Defensively, senior Brendan Hynes led a gutsy effort that forced the Mountaineers into 14 turnovers and just two goals in the final quarter of the contest. Two-time Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week Benny Pugh was outstanding in goal once again, making eight saves on the day.
"Today was exactly what we thought it would be. Mount St. Mary's is a tough, well-coached team, and the two of us have played gritty close games for three years now,” Head Coach Dan Chemotti said. “We were ready for this game to be decided in the fourth quarter like the last two and once again, that was the case today. I give our guys credit for grinding out a tough win.”
The Spiders jumped out of the gates quickly when Hynes gathered up a groundball and fired it into the back of the net just 37 seconds into the contest to grab a 1-0 advantage.
Five minutes later, Richmond executed a perfect man-up offense leading to a Hatfield goal off an assist from classmate Adrian Nash to push it to 2-0.
That's when the back and forth battle began with The Mount getting two goals back before freshman Tyler Shoults fired home his first collegiate goal with under 20 seconds to play in the opening quarter to give Richmond a 3-2 lead.
A defensive battle ensued in the second quarter with both teams finding the back of the net in the stanza as Richmond took a 4-3 cushion into halftime.
The second half started much the same way the first half ended with the two defenses putting on quite a display as the game went almost 17 minutes without a goal from either side.
Senior Austin Cunningham broke the silence with a goal at the 6:18 mark of the third quarter, but once again the Mount answered with two goals in the final two minutes of the stanza to tie the game up at 5-5 heading into the fourth.
Less than two minutes into the fourth, Ginestro took a feed from Cunningham and fired it home to give the Spiders a 6-5 lead. Mount answered a minute later to tie things back up at 6-6.
Senior J.P. Forester took a feed from classmate Austin Brown in a man-up situation to reclaim the lead for Richmond, a lead it would never relinquish after Hatfield found the back of the net less than a minute later to make it a 8-6 lead for the Spiders.
The Mount got one goal back, but Lee proved to be the closer for the Spiders, scoring twice in the final three minutes of the contest to seal the victory.
Richmond returns home on Saturday when it hosts 16th-ranked Marquette in a top-20 showdown. Game time at Robins Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
