Spiders’ Late Rally Comes Up Just Short Against Toledo
02/24/2017 | Baseball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team scored in three of the final four innings on Friday afternoon, but it wasn't enough as the Spiders dropped a 6-4 decision to Toledo.
Junior Vinny Capra led the offensive attack with his first four-hit performance as a Spider, which included two RBIs on the day. Jonathan de Marte had another multi-hit performance with two hits in the contest.
Freshman Aaron Winkler had his second straight strong outing, allowing only one baserunner in nearly two innings of relief work.
“We dug ourselves too big of an early hole,” Head Coach Tracy Woodson said. “We gave them too many opportunities early offensively and our bats didn't get going until it was too late. We'll come out on Sunday and try to win the weekend.”
Toledo got on the board first with two balls sent to deep center that plated two runs and put the Rockets up 2-0 after the two innings of play.
The Rockets got another run in the third and two more in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead after five complete.
Richmond's offense got rolling in the sixth when they chased Toledo starter Ross Achter. de Marte got things started with a single through the left side and advance to second on an error. Two batters later, junior Daniel Brumbaugh brought de Marte in for the Spiders' first run of the day.
The Spiders would keep the momentum on their side when Brandon Johnson led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to right. After Zach Kurtz drew a walk, Capra laced a single into center to plate Johnson and put runners on the corners with no outs.
A pickoff attempt ended in a rundown, which allowed Kurtz to score and bring Richmond within 6-3 after seven.
Kurtz and Capra tried to start a two-out rally in the ninth with a double from Kurtz and an RBI single from Capra, but Toledo was able to hold on to the two-run lead and secure the 6-4 victory.
Richmond returns to action on Sunday when they take on Toledo again. Game time at Pitt Field is set for 10 a.m. The Spiders will follow that up with a 2 p.m. tilt against Binghamton.
