Spiders Split Sunday Doubleheader
02/26/2017 | Baseball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – On a sunny Sunday afternoon at Pitt Field, the University of Richmond baseball team split a doubleheader with Toledo and Binghamton.
In the opener, the Spiders jumped all over Toledo, 15-9, before dropping a 15-0 decision Binghamton in the doubleheader finale.
Sophomore Caleb Ward had four hits, including three for extra bases, along with three RBIs and a run scored to highlight the offensive attack. Junior Daniel Brumbaugh had four hits as well, three of them doubles, and three RBIs on the day as well for the Spiders.
On the mound, sophomore Jacob Lamb was outstanding in relief, tossing 4.1 innings, allowing two hits and striking out four to pick up his first win of the season.
“We still haven't put together a complete game. Sundays are important days as the season goes on and we need to do a better job of competing for a full game,” Head Coach Tracy Woodson said. “It's early in the season, but we know we have to keep working on getting better every time we step on the field.”
Game 1: Richmond 15, Toledo 9
In the opener against Toledo, Richmond's offense got going early and often as D.J. Lee, Dalton Light and Kyle Adams laced back-to-back-to-back singles to lead off the home half of the first. Jonathan de Marte followed with a fielder's choice to plate a run and a Rocket error scored another one.
Brumbaugh kept the scoring going with a double to plate de Marte and three batters later, another Toledo error brought home the fourth Spider run of the opening frame.
Toledo got two back in the top of the second, but then the pitching took over as Lamb and Layne Schnitz-Paxton settled in.
The Spider offense got rolling again in the top of the fifth when de Marte laced a double down the left field line to score Kyle Adams and came home a batter when Brumbaugh uncorked his second double of the day. Two batters later, Ward sent a triple down the right field line to push the Spiders lead to 7-2 after five complete.
Richmond put together its biggest inning in nearly three years in the home half of the sixth, plating eight runs, highlighted by Brumbaugh's third double of the day and Ward's second extra base hit of the afternoon, which helped the Spiders grab a 15-2 lead.
Toledo would try to chip away at the Richmond lead with seven runs over the next two innings, but sophomore Peter Bovenzi came out of the pen to close the door on the Spider victory.
Game 2: Binghamton 15, Richmond 0
Binghamton's Nick Wegmann proved to be a dose of kryptonite for the Spider offense, scattering three hits over five innings, while not allowing a run.
Wegmann's offense had his back, putting together six runs in the first five frames thanks to eight hits to grab a 6-0 lead.
The Bearcats kept the offense coming with two runs in each of the sixth and seventh, while the Richmond offense tried to get going with five hits from the bottom four spots in the lineup.
The Spiders weren't able to get anything going in the final three innings as Binghamton rounded out a perfect 3-0 weekend in RVA with the 15-0 victory.
Richmond returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to in-state rival James Madison. Game time in Harrisonburg is set for 3 p.m.
