Pugh Named SoCon Defensive Player Of The Week For Third Time
03/21/2017 | Men's Lacrosse
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In order to boast the nation's best defense, special players are needed to make special plays.
That's exactly what the University of Richmond men's lacrosse team has had to start the 2017 season with the Spiders taking home their fourth defensive player of the week honor on Tuesday.
Senior goalie Benny Pugh earned his third accolade of the season after registering a season-high 16 saves in Richmond's win over Jacksonville on Saturday.
Pugh's 16 saves was one away from program record for single game saves, a record he holds from 2015 (17).
His efforts helped the Spiders shut out the Dolphins in the first half en route to a 7-0 lead at the break.
The Powhatan, Va. native currently leads the country in goals against average (5.49) and save percentage (.691).
Pugh and the Spiders are back on the road this weekend when they travel to long-time rival High Point. Game time is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday.
