03/25/2017 | Women's Tennis
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team took on East Carolina in its second match in as many days, but was unable to pull off the win, falling to the Pirates, 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.
“We fought hard today and looked much better than last match,” head coach Mark Wesselink said. “Our doubles play continues to be a bright spot, as we won five of the last six doubles points.”
The Spiders have dominated in doubles play this season, and this match was no exception, as Richmond won on courts 1 and 2 to take a 1-0 lead early.
Kiana Marshall and Lyndell Giffenig took down their opponents 6-1 at No. 2, before Gaby Rosales and Brittany Boys clinched the point with a 7-6(5) win at No. 1.
ECU took things from there, sweeping singles play to take the 4-1 win.
“We are so close to a breakthrough, and I think everyone feels it,” Wesselink said. “I like our unity and everyone's belief in themselves.”
The Spiders return to action on Wednesday, March 29, when they travel to Harrisonburg, Virginia, to take on James Madison. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
