Spiders Sweep Villanova for Second-Straight Win

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The City of Brotherly Love showed some love to the University of Richmond women's tennis team this weekend.
The Spiders solidified a 2-0 weekend Saturday afternoon, sweeping host Villanova, 4-0.
"I was really proud of the fight and toughness of our team on a cold, windy day,” head coach Mark Wesselink. “The team really stepped it up in singles today after a close win for the doubles point."
The Wildcats started strong, winning at No. 3 doubles, 6-2, but the Spiders bounced back, winning on the final two courts to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Kiana Marshall and Lyndell Giffenig defeated Villanova's Evans and Martinez on court 1, 7-5, before Dessislava Zlateva and Lea Owens clinched the point on court 2 with a 6-4 defeat of Rotman and Busby.
Richmond then began its dominance in singles play, as Kelsey Williams took down Busby at No. 5, 6-2, 6-2, and Giffenig followed suit, defeating Brewer 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6. Owens then clinched the sweep, defeating Villanova's Burdick, 6-3, 6-1 on court 3.
The Spiders return home for an 11:30 a.m. matchup with Hampton on Sunday. The two squads will meet on the Richmond Courts next to Robins Stadium.
