UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – It was a record-breaking day for the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team.
Sophomore Marissa Brown broke the single-season assist record, logging six on the day to hit 38 for the year, as the Spiders took down St. Bonaventure, 15-1.
On the other end of the field, the Richmond defense held the Bonnies to just one goal, the lowest goal total since the Spiders held Virginia Tech to one tally back in 1995.
“We had spent a lot of the week leading up to St. Bonaventure focusing on our efforts in the ride and also on defense,” head coach Allison Kwolek said. “The team came out and did such a great job executing and working together on both of those aspects of the game. I was really impressed.”
Kim Egizi led all scorers with four goals, while Sam Geiersbach logged a hat trick and an assist for four points on the day. Brown finished with a game-high seven points.
Natalia Chaney and Katie Trainer each tallied two scores for the Spiders, while Aly Fries, Reagan Williams and Kathleen Berkery all scored one goal apiece.
“The offense did a great job of moving the ball at speed and creating opportunities for a lot of people today, and Marissa had another great game dispersing the ball to open cutters,” Kwolek added.
It was a spectacular day on the defensive end, as Megan Gianforte held the Bonnies scoreless in the opening 44 minutes and finished with four saves, before Danni LeServe came in in relief, also saving four shots and allowing just one Bonnie goal.
Ten different Spiders caused a turnover in the game, and the Spiders collected 25 ground balls to SBU's 17.
With the win, the Spiders clinched a spot in the 2017 Atlantic 10 Lacrosse Championship, slated for May 4-7 in Philadelphia.
Richmond returns to action on Sunday, hosting Saint Joseph's in the final home game of the season. First draw is set for 1 p.m., and the team will celebrate the careers of Leslie Espenschied, Melissa Teel and Natalia Chaney before the start of the game.
