SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Four years ago, Benny Pugh took over the duties in goal for the University of Richmond men's lacrosse program.
Pugh stepped on the field for the final time in the regular season this past Saturday and did exactly what he has been doing all year long, shut down the opposition.
Facing the league's best offense in Furman, who came in averaging 14 goals per game, Pugh and the defensive unit allowed just four goals all afternoon, only three of which went to the Powhatan, Va. native who played nearly 50 minutes on senior day.
For his efforts Pugh was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week for the fifth time this spring, the most of any player in the SoCon.
On the year, Pugh has led the country all spring long in goals against average (5.87) and save percentage (.676). His 165 saves this year are a new single-season program record as well.
Pugh and his teammates will now begin their quest for a SoCon championship, beginning Thursday when they take on third-seeded Furman. Game time at Robins Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m.
