PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Getting the job done doesn't always look pretty.
The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team took care of business on Thursday afternoon in a back-and-forth game, taking the lead for good with 18:40 to play on the way to a 13-11 Atlantic 10 quarterfinal win over La Salle.
With the win, the Spiders advance to face second-seeded and host Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon. First draw in the second of two A-10 semifinals is set for 3:30 p.m.
Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Sam Geiersbach and First Team All-Conference attacker Kim Egizi combined for nine Spider goals, scoring five and four, respectively. Geiersbach led all players with six points.
Marissa Brown, Katie Trainer, Aly Fries and Reagan Williams each scored once in the win, while Kathleen Berkery logged two assists and Melissa Teel tallied one.
The Spiders started the scoring with a Geiersbach goal just over three and a half minutes into the game, but streaky play by both teams sent the Explorers into the half with a 6-5 lead.
La Salle went up 7-5 less than a minute into the second half, but a four-goal spirt by the Spiders would give them the lead for good.
Megan Gianforte stopped 11 shots in the win, while Egizi and Caroline Queally combined to win 10 of the Spiders' 16 draw controls. Geiersbach and Leslie Espenschied both caused two turnovers and collected three ground balls, while Tegan Helms collected a game-high four ground balls.
