Energy On Display As Spiders Hit Practice Field

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – It had been over seven months.
The waiting was finally over for the University of Richmond football team on Thursday afternoon as the Spiders hit the practice fields for the first time in preparation for the 2017 season.
Energy, tempo and excitement were obvious on day one of training camp under new Head Coach Russ Huesman, who enters camp with 94 players on the roster, one of the largest rosters in recent memory for the Spiders.
"I was pleased with our energy and excitement on day one. I thought our guys did a great job of working hard and setting the tone for the rest of training camp," Huesman said. "What's important now is that we continue to work on cleaning up mistakes and really focusing on getting better every time we step on this practice field."
The up-tempo offense was on display with plenty of speed and athleticism shown throughout the practice from both the wide receiving group and the deep stable of running backs.
Richmond's new 4-2-5 defense showed speed and play-making ability throughout the practice. Junior Micah Keels manned the new Dime position, which we'll feature a more in-depth look in the coming days at RichmondSpiders.com
After nearly 20 season-ending injuries last year for the Spiders, health was not a worry for day one with nearly all of the 94 student-athletes on the roster being a full-go.
Senior QB Kyle Lauletta, RB Gordon Collins and RB Xavier Goodall, all of whom suffered ACL injuries last year were fully healthy for day one and showed flashes of that play-making ability they displayed in 2016.
Richmond returns to the practice field at 7:45 on Friday morning at Robins Stadium.
