Spiders Open Season with 5-1 Loss to Iowa
08/20/2017 | Women's Soccer
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team rebounded quickly from an early Iowa lead, but couldn't continue the offensive firepower on Sunday afternoon as they fell to the visiting Hawkeyes, 5-1, at Robins Stadium.
Â
The Hawkeyes got on the board early when Natalie Winters slipped a pass through the Richmond defense to Kaleigh house, who knocked in her first goal of the day in the sixth minute.
Â
The Spiders answered quickly, when senior Olivia Aha sent a free kick high into the box in the eighth minute, finding junior Mackenzie Cox for her first career goal.
Â
Iowa would go on to score twice more in the opening half, as Haus and Olivia Fiegel both received long balls behind the defense and scored to make the score 3-1 at the break.
Â
Fiegel logged her second tally of the day in the 52nd minute on a shot from 15 yards out, before Haus completed the hat trick in the 56th minute off of a deflection to send the Hawkeyes home with a 5-1 win.
Â
Senior Katie Brennan finished the game with four saves in goal for the Spiders before being relieved by freshman Olivia Sjodin for the final 34:53. Sjodin logged one save on the day. Iowa outshot the Spiders, 14-5, and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
Richmond returns to action next Sunday, August 27, when the team travels to Harrisonburg to face in-state foe James Madison. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
