Spider Women Favored to Win Atlantic 10 Title

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Spider Women's Cross Country team has been picked to repeat as the Atlantic 10 Champion this season, according to a poll conducted by the league's 14 head coaches.Â
The Spiders received 12 of 14 first-place votes from the league's coaches while Dayton and Davidson, who rounded out the top-three, each earned one first-place vote.Â
Richmond, the two-time defending A-10 Champions, returns a core of veteran runners, including five runners who finished in the top-18 at last year's championship to secure the title. Senior Kylie Regan led the way last season clocking a 17:52.7 to finish 13th overall (17:52.7) followed by junior Ave Grosenheider who crossed the line two seconds behind Regan. Sophomore Claire Brown, who had a strong debut season, turned in the second fastest time by a freshman at last year's championship (17:55.3) to place 15th. Junior Colleen Carney and senior Shelby Cain rounded out the scoring for the Spiders last year.Â
On the men's side, the Spiders were picked to finish 11th, but return a talented group of runners in seniors Alex Lucking and Johnny Hogue and sophomore Miles Clikeman. Lucking led the Spiders at last season's championship just ahead of a Clikeman who turned in the third-fastest time by a freshman at the championship.Â
Richmond opens the season on Saturday (Sept. 2) morning with the Spider Alumni Open at Pole Green Park.Â
The 2017 Atlantic 10 Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships will be hosted by George Mason at Oatland Plantation in Leesburg, Va. on October 28.Â
