Spiders Drop 3-1 Decision to #24 Maine
09/01/2017 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Head coach Gina Lucido likes to challenge her team, and the 2017 schedule illustrates that with seven ranked opponents, including four NCAA Tournament participants. The Spiders battled one of those ranked teams in #24 Maine on Friday afternoon at Crenshaw Field. Despite a strong battle, Richmond dropped a 3-1 decision.
Â
Senior Kasey Gilbride got things started early when she connected with classmate Katrina Balatgek less than two minutes into the contest to find the back of the cage. The Spiders enjoyed a 1-0 lead before Maine's Brianna Ricker evened the score at 1-1.
Â
Both teams would look for opportunities to take a lead going into the break, but each team's back line remained strong. Â
Â
Out of the break, freshman Florentine Beelaerts van Blokland fired off a shot, but the ball sailed over the crossbar. However Maine's Hana Davis gave the Black Bears a 2-1 advantage when her shot snuck past the keeper.
Â
Maine looked to extend its lead late in the second half, but sophomore Amanda DaSilva made a stellar defensive save in the cage to keep the score, 2-1. With about five minutes remaining in the game, Davis notched her second goal of the game to give the Black Bears a 3-1 advantage. Maine continued to add on to its lead, but DaSilva was there again to turn away their chance as she finished the game with two defensive saves.Â
Â
The Spiders return to action on Sunday, Sept. 3 to wrap up the homestand looking for revenge against Maine, as the two squads meet again. Action on Sunday begins at 12 p.m.
