Late Goals Send #24 Black Bears Past Spiders, 4-1
09/03/2017 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – For over 50 minutes, the University of Richmond field hockey team showed they could go toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the country.
However, the #24 Black Bears of the University of Maine used a late spurt to put away a 4-1 win over the Spiders on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
Junior Olivia Hubert scored her third goal of the season and classmate Felicitas Heinzel set a career-high with 11 saves on the afternoon for the Spiders.
Maine got on the board first, finding the back of the cage in the first two minutes, but the Spiders responded quickly.
Less than three minutes later, Richmond drew a corner and Hubert tipped in a pass from Kasey Gilbride to even the score at 1-1.
Heinzel went to work after that, notching nine saves in the first half, constantly turning the Black Bears away to send the game into the break tied at 1-1.
It would continue for the first 10 minutes of the second half with Heinzel and the Spiders defense continuing to stifle any Black Bear offensive attack.
However, in the 47th minute, Maine broke through to take a 2-1 lead and scored two more goals in the next 10 minutes to take a commanding 4-1 cushion.
Florentine Beelaerts van Blokland fire off two shots in the final 15 minutes that nearly got Richmond on the board for its second goal, but they went just wide.
The Spiders had an extended corner in the final minute, but were unable to convert as the Black Bears secured the victory.
Richmond returns to action next Sunday when it travels to #23 Old Dominion. Game time in Norfolk is set for 2 p.m.
